Bargain Basement
- My skin. I've no idea why it's so bad - I'm still availing myself of the free fruit and mineral water at work and yet, I'm practically covered in boils.
- I still haven't found the perfect placemats for my gorgeous new dining table and guests are still being forced to put their plates on magazines. John Lewis has some nice ones, yet they all state 'Not heatproof! Do not allow to come into contact with food, or anything hot, or hot food'. What the shit are they for then?
- One of my favourite clubs is homeless again and I have yet to find a suitable replacement dancing and dressing up opportunity.
- I'm feeling overwhelmed by all the work I've got to do (NB college work, not, heaven forfend, actual work).
Liberty Christmas Shop
- I got a B+?+ for my first philosophy assignment. Apparently [this is good], but philosophers won't commit to something so crass as actual marks, hence this ambiguous code.
- I get my new windows next week. Unfortunately, that means I'll have to greet my house guest with a boarded up hole in the wall but I doubt she'll notice, because...
- We're going to see Nick Cave! Eee!
- Radisson Hotels sent me an advent calendar. With chocolate and everything.
- Despite the plague of boils, I am having a good hair day.
Disappointing
- I've had to drop Sociolinguistics to re-join the Spanish class, which contains actual Spanish people. Surely this is an unfair advantage.
Compensation
- I'm going to do Philosophy instead - with a professor who is not only famous and respected in his field but who is also pictured on the university website wearing tweed! And a cravat! How scholarly.
- Philosophy is on a Tuesday and not a Friday.
Financially Embarrassed
- I was doing really well at being frugal and then in a fit of boredom and stress, cut a swathe through ebay and Primark.
But Glamourous
- I do have lots of pretty things now (or will have very soon) including an antique ostrich feather fan, a cape, long leather gloves and a relatively slutty tight skirt.
- I'm not overdrawn yet, which means I can fund the purchase of more glitter and possibly some new shoes.
- And I have exciting places to flaunt such trinkets.
Random pieces of joy
- My dad's back from his super long holiday. Hooray! Just in time to help me with my coursework.
- One of my best and oldest friends is coming to visit in December AND we're going to see IAMX. Eee!
- This will swiftly be followed by another glorious trip to Brighton (for which I MUST resume the saving scheme).
Pantomime Villain
- Tiscali. How I hate you. As soon as I've got time to deal with the bailiffs you will no doubt send round for non-payment, I will be cancelling my contract with you.
Right, onwards!
Drek
I met up with my financial adviser last week and my suggestion of putting away £100 or maybe £150 if I try very, very hard into my pension was met with him gently pushing the paper with the projections on it across the table to me. In order to have any kind of a life when I'm old, I should be paying around £750 A MONTH into the fund. This worries me so I'll just have to resume my scheme to Marry Well.
I have a lingering cough, which is getting on my nerves. And everyone else's probably.
Glik
Despite not going to the gym at all last week and 'that' incident at Le Pain Quotidienne, I've lost half a stone since I joined. I can only assume that some of my major organs are now made of bread and therefore have less density.
I have lots of exciting nights out planned, most of which will involve elaborate dresses and glitter. Even more than usual!
Summer is over, but I managed to not spend all of it prone on the sofa, watching entire series of DVDs in one weekend. I'm feeling quite motivated lately so I might even post the pictures of what I've been up to.
[this is not good]
- Smokers. Oh, not all smokers - I'm not that much of a hypocrite. Specifically, people who walk along the street, smoking and flicking their ash behind them. When I smoked, people used to take the piss out of me because I couldn't smoke and walk at the same time and this is why. I don't smoke any more (more or less) and I don't want to turn up to work in the morning covered in someone else's ash.
- My wool still hasn't arrived. Boo.
[this is wierd]
- My dad is talking about getting married. He's not seeing anyone, he hasn't even gone out with anyone but his friends are trying to fix him up with ladies and he doesn't seem to realise that he could just go out with someone without having to make any kind of a commitment. We asked what the one of the ladies was like and he replied with a damning 'she was quite presentable'. When questioned further he said 'when you get to my age, you don't expect a babe'. Apparently, if you do get a babe she's probably after something and he'd regret it for the rest of his life. I don't know how I feel about this; he's lonely and I don't want him to be but after you've been with someone for 50 years, how do you get to have that same level of companionship and understanding with someone new?
[this is a vague musing]
- I'm considering cutting my hair. Ideally, I'd like to have it shorter during the week, then big and exciting at the weekends. Also, I'm wierdly fascinated with how long I can get it before I lose patience/the split ends take over.
[this is good]
- Snog, Marry, Avoid. I'm obsessed with this. It's brilliant! Terrifying orange girls wearing gaffer tape and badly applied eyeshadow are plucked off the street and made to wash their faces, before the general public confirms how much nicer they think they look. It's a little unfair because they only seem to show the responses from frightfully well-spoken public school boys. I wonder if they showed pictures of girls who are styling themselves on Jodie Marsh (why? WHY?) round the streets of Croydon if they'd get a different response.
- I'm going to the real estate property fair in November with work. It might not sound that exciting but did I mention it was in Cannes? It's in Cannes! Ha!
- In the absence of my knitting wool, I'm entertaining myself by doing some Nick Cave cross stitch.
- My tomato plants (generously donated by a certain CQM) have baby tomatoes. This is enormously exciting and you'd think they were actual babies by the amount of attention they are getting (including being photographed on an almost daily basis) except that they will be eaten at some point.
Going down
- Everyone who gets in my way on my commute to work. Yes you! Man walking slowly, whilst reading the paper. And you! Girl with backpack and whiny boyfriend. Get out of my way! Where's Babs to bring back Death Tube?
- Any advert concerning 'delicate underarm skin'. I'm sorry, since when was 'delicate underarm skin' a problem? What are the alleged symptoms? Genius work on the marketing people, for managing to sell yet another non-product and I'll keep an eye out for the forearm lotion, or earlobe gel. Please: send me something useful, like shin cream, where I actually do have dry skin. (Although, on second thoughts, I reckon I could make a fortune on earlobe gel, flogging it off to old ladies who spent too long wearing too-heavy earrings).
- Jimmy Carr
Going up
- Blogging at work! Yeah!
- Remember that essay I was struggling over a few months back? I got a first! A first!!
Normally I try to have more positive than negative points, and I'm sure there are more positive, happy things in my life, I just can't remember what they are (not in a bad way, I'm currently absorbed with lunch, to be followed by more chocolate from the snack box, so I can't concentrate) but the fact that I got a FIRST is filling me with more than enough delight.
Minor things vexing me today:
1. Cold. My windows are rattling and it's quite chilly in here. I hate being cold.
2. Losing my MP3 player on Sunday. Ok, it was free from nectar points and I had just noticed that the wire was hanging on the headphones, but still. Bah.
3. The evil witch on the train today, who not only used the phrase (whilst bellowing into her blackberry) 'have you taken it offline to the client' then dropped her banana skin on the floor of the train.
That's it. Everything else is ace.
Special mention goes to:
1. My new job is marvellous. I spent today at one of the outlet stores, with instructions to shop 'to see how it all works'. I also get sent out for lunch, go home on time and they all got me cake for my birthday.
2. The glitter theme of my presents
3. Continuing over-excitement in general.
4. Steph for helping me clear up on Sunday, especially for that hour or so when I could barely raise my head.
February is like the Tuesday of the year, is it not? Too long till the next weekend/holiday/my birthday and the good intentions of January/Monday have long since been abandoned. Having said that, this year has been supreme fun, so maybe it's a new precedent.
Things I loathe today:
1. Postmen who ring the bell and run away before you have a chance to answer the door, forcing you to run up the high street in your jimmers, waving the red 'While you were out' card, to claim your package.
2. Stupid reviews of stupid Spanish radio shows. (It's stupid because I wrote it. Trust me)
3. Tiscali, who replied to my weary email of 'please don't make me ring your customer service line as they hung up on me after making me crawl behind all my furniture for 40 minutes to look at sockets' with 'given the nature of your enquiry have you tried calling customer service?'
Things boiling my kettle today:
1. BBC Radio 6
2. Knitting in public
3. Getting way, way, way too excited about the weekend. Already!
4. Wearing hand made socks
5. Finding old photos, thought to have been stolen by an ex. Very flattering photographs at that, so a Good Find.
